Zero Temperature Chiral Phase Transition in SU(N) Gauge Theories.

چکیده
We investigate the zero temperature chiral phase transition in an SU(N) gauge theory as the number of fermions Nf is varied. We argue that there exists a critical number of fermions N c f , above which there is no chiral symmetry breaking or confinement, and below which both chiral symmetry breaking and confinement set in. We estimate N c f and discuss the nature of the phase transition. An SU(N) gauge theory, even at zero temperature, can exist in different phases depending on the number of massless fermions Nf in the theory. The phases are defined by whether or not chiral symmetry breaking takes place. For QCD with two or three light quarks, chiral symmetry breaking and confinement occur at roughly the same scale. By contrast, in any SU(N) gauge theory, asymptotic freedom (and hence chiral symmetry breaking and confinement) is lost if the number of fermions is larger than a certain value (= 11N/2 for fermions in the fundamental representation).

A Comment on the Zero Temperature Chiral Phase Transition in SU(N) Gauge Theories
Recently Appelquist, Terning, andWijewardhana investigated the zero temperature chiral phase transition in SU(N) gauge theory as the number of fermions Nf is varied. They argued that there is a critical number of fermions N c f , above which there is no chiral symmetry breaking and below which chiral symmetry breaking and confinement set in. They further argued that that the transition is not s...
متن کاملTopological susceptibility of SU(N) gauge theories at finite temperature
We investigate the large-N behavior of the topological susceptibility χ in four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories at finite temperature, and in particular across the finite-temperature transition at Tc. For this purpose, we consider the lattice formulation of the SU(N) gauge theories and perform Monte Carlo simulations for N = 4, 6. The results indicate that χ has a nonvanishing large-N limit fo...

متن کاملChiral Phase Transition for SU(N) Gauge Theories
We describe [1] the chiral phase transition for vector-like SU(N) gauge theories as a function of the number of quark flavors Nf by making use of an anomalyinduced effective potential. The potential depends explicitly on the full β-function and the anomalous dimension γ of the quark mass operator. By using this potential we argue that chiral symmetry is restored for γ < 1. A perturbative comput...

We analyze the finite temperature phase diagram of QCD with fermions in the adjoint representation. The simulations performed with four dynamical Majorana fermions, which is equivalent to two Dirac fermions, show that the deconfinement and chiral phase transitions occur at two distinct temperatures, T chiral ≃ 6.65T deconf. While the deconfinement transition is first order we find evidence for ...
